My grandparents from my mom’s side were furniture makers and antique dealers. They had all kinds of cool vintage cabinets in their home in Laguna. One of the my favorites is the kitchen hutch. My grandmother used to display some of her crystals on the top part of the cabinet and her beautiful cake stands on the desk part. I wish I inherited her hutch but after they passed away, I don’t know what became of it or if my relatives sold it. Sayaaaaang!
A hutch is a set of shelves or cabinets placed on top of a lower unit with a counter and either drawers or cabinets. It is a multipurpose piece of furniture that can be used almost anywhere in the house and are often seen in the form of desks, dining room or kitchen furniture. It is also called a Hoosier cabinet which is a type of cupboard popular in the first decades of the 20th century. Named after the Hoosier Manufacturing Co. of New Castle, Indiana.
There are three types of hutches: the kitchen hutch, the china hutch or the buffet hutch.
As I mentioned before, we’re currently building a walk-in china closet in Maison Epperson. There’s an area in the butler’s pantry where we can’t build a floor-to-ceiling closet as it is next to a window so I’m having a custom kitchen hutch built instead.
Here are my inspirations:
I have until this weekend to finalize the design of our custom hutch. It would probably be a kitchen and china hutch combo. I’ll keep you updated.
Happy weekend!
