So, I tweeted this last night:

Ang dami na naman nag request ng recipe! This recipe is actually a repost from my previous blog mabuhaygirl. Anyway, this is one of my favorite dishes so I don’t mind blogging it again. I edited it a bit to make it more current. Here you go:

Are you looking for a meatless recipes (well, the small shrimp don’t count, haha)? Here’s a Pinoy favorite that’s budget friendly, big on flavor, and super easy to cook:

Binagoongang Crispy Tofu!

Before some of you turn up your noses on this tofu dish (may mga kilala akong hindi bilib sa tokwa! LOL), please give tofu a chance! Hahaha… Seriously, tofu rocks! The key is in the texture. You want it very crispy!

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup cooking oil (for deep frying)

Tofu (firm)

For this dish, I used the brand Morinaga. Get the firm kind (blue packaging), you can buy them at The Landmark and Rustan’s groceries.

If you want fool-proof crispy tofu, I suggest you buy the Momen Tofu brand. The texture is extra firm and easy to brown. Again, you can get them at The Landmark and Rustan’s groceries.

Your choice of bagoong

For this recipe, I used the bagoong that my friend made — garlic bagoong! I find that Barrio Fiesta’s sweet-style works well with this recipe too.

Brown rice

I like Doña Maria Jasponica Brown Rice

Easy peasy:

Step 1: Dry the tofu using paper napkins.
Step 2: Cut the block of tofu into small cubes. Slice it horizontally first, then vertically into small squares. You don’t want the tofu bits to be too chunky. Plus, it’s faster to crisp the tofu in small pieces.
Step 3: In a sauce pan (or any deep pan), heat up the cooking oil. You want the oil to be really hot, smokey to a point to really crisp the tofu.

Tip:Once the oil is very hot, add the tofu cubes and DON’T turn it over until it’s brown on one side. In my experience, it takes 4-5 minutes. After that, watch over it as they will crisp fast.

Step 4: When the tofu is already well-done, using a strainer, drain the excess oil.
Step 5: Arrange the tofu cubes on a plate with the brown rice and serve the bagoong as a side dish. You can also mix it together if you like.
Step 6: Serve with a smile! 😀

Steamed kangkong would be a good side dish with this.

Happy eating!
